Carbon Powder for Iron Foundry Carburizing: Buyer Checklist

How foundry buyers can define carbon powder requirements by furnace, base iron, chemistry, particle size, recovery and trial method.

Foundry buyers should define a carburizing material by the melt route, not only by fixed carbon. Furnace type, base iron, addition stage and target chemistry affect how a trial should be designed and measured.

Establish the chemistry window

State the required fixed carbon and limits for sulfur, ash, volatile matter, moisture and phosphorus. Confirm the analysis method and whether the values are acceptance limits or typical targets.

Match particle size to addition practice

The Zhonghao catalogue lists 1–3 mm, 3–5 mm and 3–8 mm references. Select the appropriate range based on handling, addition point and dissolution expectations, then define fines tolerance.

Measure the trial

Record charge weight, addition timing, carbon recovery and any slag or handling observations. The order should state the final specification, sampling, packing and inspection procedure.
