How to Read an Industrial Material Specification Table

Learn to compare indicators, units, minimum and maximum limits, ranges, grades, size and order notes without mixing product data.

Specification tables help buyers compare offers only when every row is interpreted in the correct product context.

Read the limit direction

“≥” indicates a minimum and “≤” indicates a maximum. A range such as 5–7% is different from either. Copy the symbol, unit and value together when preparing an RFQ.

Keep units attached

Percent, millimeters, kilograms and megajoules per kilogram describe different quantities. Never move a number between rows or products without its indicator and unit.

Separate grades from test results

A grade such as Mg99.95 identifies a specification column. A batch test result is a measured value. Confirm whether a document shows a limit, a typical value or an actual result.

Check the product title and source

Similar words can appear in different catalog sections. Verify that the table belongs to the product being quoted—for example, Formed Coke data should not be applied to Semi Coke or Carbon Raiser.

Convert the table into an RFQ

Highlight the rows critical to the process, add size or grade, quantity, packing, destination, inspection and document requirements, and ask the supplier to confirm the final order specification in writing.
