Magnesium for Steel Desulfurization: Process-Fit Questions

A procurement overview of the questions required before qualifying magnesium for steel desulfurization systems.

Magnesium can be used in qualified hot-metal or steel desulfurization systems, but the application is highly process-specific. Primary magnesium ingots are not automatically interchangeable with the prepared forms used by an injection or addition system.

Define the treatment route

The buyer should identify the vessel, injection or addition equipment, carrier system, target sulfur level and existing reagent practice. State whether the inquiry concerns primary magnesium as an input for further preparation or a directly usable product form.

Specify form as well as chemistry

Particle form, passivation, blending, packaging and feeding behavior may be essential to a desulfurization system. If the requirement is for granules, powder, wire or a prepared reagent, a standard ingot offer does not satisfy the application. The product form must match the approved equipment and safety system.

Qualification is plant-specific

Treatment performance depends on initial sulfur, metal temperature, mixing, slag practice, reagent delivery and other operating variables. A buyer should define a controlled trial and monitor the process metrics used by its metallurgical team. Supplier literature cannot replace plant qualification.

Safety and handling are mandatory

Magnesium handling near molten metal requires trained personnel, approved procedures and suitable equipment. Storage conditions and moisture control must follow the receiving plant’s safety system and the applicable product documentation.

Information required before a supply discussion

  • Treatment route and equipment
  • Required magnesium product form
  • Chemistry and impurity limits
  • Packaging, storage and feeding requirements
  • Trial quantity and qualification criteria
  • COA, sampling and documentation scope

Zhonghao’s Mg99.95 and Mg99.90 ingot data can support an initial primary-metal discussion. The final usable form, process fit, safety review and acceptance criteria must be confirmed by the buyer’s qualified technical team.
