Magnesium is used as an alloying element in many aluminum-alloy systems, but the correct primary magnesium input depends on the target alloy and the complete charge calculation.

Start with the target alloy specification

Provide the aluminum alloy designation, chemistry range and plant or customer standard. State whether the magnesium ingot is a direct furnace addition, part of master-alloy preparation or used through another controlled route. This lets the supplier and buyer discuss Mg99.95 or Mg99.90 in the correct context.

Calculate more than magnesium recovery

The buyer must consider both the magnesium contribution and the impurities introduced with the ingot. Critical elements depend on the aluminum alloy. Compare the primary magnesium COA with the existing melt, other additions and expected process recovery.

Confirm the practical addition method

Ingot size and weight influence charging and handling. Buyers should define whether whole ingots, controlled pieces or another format is used under their approved procedure. Safe handling, dry storage and the plant’s molten-metal practice remain the responsibility of qualified operating personnel.

A useful COA identifies the lot and reports magnesium plus the agreed impurity fields. If incoming inspection is required, define the sampling point, test method and acceptance rule. Keep the primary magnesium lot traceable to the aluminum-alloy batch when customer or quality systems require it.

The best inquiry is not “send your magnesium price.” It is a short technical brief that connects the required primary metal to the target aluminum alloy, quantity, packing, destination and inspection plan.
