Magnesium Ingots for Die Casting: From Primary Metal to Alloy Requirement

How die-casting buyers can specify primary magnesium ingots by alloy route, impurity limits, melt practice, packing and inspection.

Die casting normally uses a defined magnesium alloy rather than unqualified primary metal. A request for primary magnesium ingots should therefore explain how the ingot will enter the alloy-production or melt-preparation route.

Identify the finished alloy

State the alloy designation, customer specification and whether the primary magnesium will be used by an alloy producer, an integrated die caster or another qualified processor. This establishes the real impurity budget and avoids treating Mg99.95 or Mg99.90 as a complete die-casting specification.

Review impurities against the full melt

Elements such as iron, nickel, copper, silicon, aluminum and zinc can have different roles or limits depending on the alloy system. The buyer should calculate the contribution from all charge materials and identify the primary-metal limits that protect the finished-alloy chemistry.

Match ingot format to operations

Confirm ingot weight, bundle or pallet arrangement, lifting method, storage and charging practice. The Zhonghao reference format is approximately 7.5 kg per ingot, with dimensions around 54 × 13 × 8 cm, subject to order confirmation. A receiving team may also need limits for damaged bundles, surface contamination or excessive oxidation.

Establish inspection and traceability

Ask for lot identification and a COA containing the agreed grade and impurity fields. Define sampling responsibility, retest procedure and any third-party inspection before quotation. If a trial is required, connect the primary-metal lot to the resulting alloy and casting evaluation.

Die-casting supply inquiry

  • Finished alloy or customer specification
  • Primary magnesium grade and critical impurity limits
  • Melt and addition route
  • Trial and recurring quantity
  • Ingot and bundle requirements
  • COA, sampling and traceability scope
  • Destination and Incoterm

Primary magnesium can support die-casting supply chains only when the input specification is connected to the finished alloy and process control plan.
