Separate the main measures
Production describes output within a defined geography and period. Export volume describes customs-recorded cross-border movement. Apparent consumption, inventory and operating rate are different measures. They should not be combined without a consistent methodology.
Check product and customs definitions
“Magnesium” can refer to primary ingot, alloys, powders, articles or other forms. A customs code may include or exclude categories that do not match the buyer’s product. Record the code, unit, country and period before comparing two datasets.
Understand the time lag
Annual and monthly releases describe the past. A plant maintenance event, policy change, freight disruption or rapid demand shift may alter the current market before the next dataset is published. Use historical figures for context, then obtain current supplier and logistics confirmation.
Avoid the production-to-availability shortcut
A high production region does not guarantee that a particular grade, packing or shipment window is immediately available. Product qualification, domestic demand, export orders, working inventory and transport capacity all affect supply.
